Hints and TipsSome things to bear in mind when packing your unit for safe and secure storage: Boxes - It is recommended that you use industry standard size boxes, this will help to store in an orderly way and also make storage easier. Storage - When storing, make sure that all items are packed safely with the boxes being packed no higher then shoulder height to avoid collapse. Packing Boxes - Try to make sure that the boxes are not overloaded, keeping boxes under 15kg each will help avoid back injuries General Items - It is a good idea to place as many of your items as possible into boxes to help avoid breakage/loss. Clothing - When storing your clothing, it is a good idea to store your hanging clothes into port-a-robes to help avoid uneccessary ironing at the other end and it also gives you somewhere to store your shoes. Rugs/Curtains - Rugs/Curtains need to be cleaned, dried completely, and wrapped in plastic before placing in storage to help prevent mould/mildew. Soft Furnishings - Make sure all soft furnishings are covered in plastic or sheets/blankets to help protect from mould/mildew. Also, make sure there are no sharp objects being placed on/near these items. Leather Furniture - Leather furniture must not be stored in plastic because the leather will sweat. You need to use sheets/blankets to protect from dust. Timber Furniture - All timber furniture should be wrapped in bubblewrap to protect from scratches, this will also help to protect your surrounding furniture. Appliances - All appliances need to be stored clean & dry with the doors to fridges/freezer left open to avoid mould/mildew. It is also a good idea to place deodorisers inside to prevent unpleasant odours. Drain water from Washing Machines/Dishwashers and hoses and tape hoses to the back of the machine. Make sure that all freezers have been defrosted. TV's & DVD's - These items will need to be wrapped in bubblewrap and then wrapped in linen (for extra protection) before being placed into a box. It is also a good idea to place silica gel satchels in the box to help absorb moisture. Computers - It is a good idea to make sure that you have done a complete back up of all your information and shut down correctly before placing these items into storage. Wrap them in bubblewrap and store them in picture cartons if possible. Fragile Items - Make sure all breakables are wrapped in bubble wrap or butchers/tissue paper and stored securely in boxes marked clearly "FRAGILE". Books - When storing books it is best to use boxes which are not too big to avoid over packing. It is also a good idea to line the boxes with plastic to help prevent mould/mildew. Metal Items - When storing metal items, wrapping them in acid free tissue paper will help avoid tarnishing. Wiping chrome or cast iron with a rust retardent will help protect these items while in storage. Battery Operated Items - Remember to remove all batteries from Remote Controls, Torches, Toys, Radio's etc to avoid damage from battery leakage. Cars & Motorbikes - We require that all vehicles have a drop sheet or drip tray placed underneath them whilst in storage to avoid floors being marked by oil leakage. Moving Parts - It is recommended that all moving parts be secured and wrapped. Itemisation - It is always a good idea to place an itemised list of contents on each box with the destination marked clearly. Rust - All moving parts should be sprayed with a rust inhibitor to protect whilst in storage Moisture/Dust - It is recommended that once you have completed your move into storage, it is a great idea to cover everything with a sheet of plastic. Also, you can place dessicant bags into the unit to help protect from mould/mildew. Lock - You will need a good quality lock to help protect your goods whilst in storage. |
